Towable or drive-away, and why it matters more here
A towable caravan is cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure, but it needs a tow vehicle with a proper hitch, and it needs somewhere to live for the six months a year you will not use it. That second problem is the one people forget. Villa communities and apartment parking in Dubai and Sharjah are not designed around a 20-foot trailer, and storage yards charge accordingly.
A motorhome solves the storage question by being one vehicle instead of two, and it drives away from a campsite in five minutes instead of forty. The trade-off is that you move your entire kitchen every time you want ice. Registration, plates and the tests nobody mentions in the ad
Light trailers towed by light vehicles have to be registered with the RTA and carry their own number plate on the rear, with the towing vehicle's plate displayed on each side. Trailers that turn up without a vehicle identification number get one stamped onto the chassis before registration goes through. Testing happens at approved centres such as Tasjeel, Tamam and Al Shirawi, and privately owned trailers have historically sat on a longer inspection cycle than commercially owned ones.
Two practical consequences. First, a caravan with no registration card and no plate is not a bargain, it is a project. Municipalities in Sharjah and Fujairah issue fines of up to AED 2,000 for camping in unauthorised areas or leaving waste behind. Dumping, burning or burying waste outside designated areas carries fines up to AED 30,000 for individuals under Federal Law No. 12 of 2018. Damaging a nature reserve under Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 can mean at least six months in jail and fines from AED 20,000 for first-category species. And under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, driving into a valley or flood zone during rain brings an AED 2,000 fine, 23 traffic points and a 60-day vehicle impoundment. What to check on used caravans for sale in UAE
Heat and salt do the damage here, not mileage. Start at the seams and the rear panel and look for water staining, then press the floor near the shower tray and the entrance step for softness. Check the chassis and A-frame underneath for rust, and work the coupling, breakaway cable and jockey wheel by hand. Read the four-digit date code on every tyre, including the spare, because a caravan that sat in a Sharjah yard for four summers will have tyres that are dangerous long before the tread wears out.
Then the systems. Run the fridge on both gas and mains, open the gas locker and inspect the regulator and hoses, test the air conditioner on a hot afternoon rather than at 8am, and treat any owner-installed solar or 12V wiring with suspicion until you have traced it. Match the VIN on the chassis to the registration card. Ask whether the unit was imported, because non-GCC vehicles need conformity paperwork and imports attract 5% customs duty on the landed value plus 5% VAT, and a seller who skipped that step is handing you the problem.
